Galien River County Park: New Buffalo’s Hidden Gem
Most visitors to New Buffalo spend their time at the beach, and understandably so. Nearly 800 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline, west-facing sunsets, and Chicago’s skyline shimmering on clear days, the New Buffalo City Beach is genuinely hard to leave. But about a mile up Red Arrow Highway, sitting quietly behind a small parking lot, is one of the most distinctive outdoor spaces in all of Southwest Michigan. Galien River County Park doesn’t compete with the beach. It offers something the beach cannot: stillness, elevation, and a rare glimpse into a Great Lakes coastal marsh that most people drive straight past.
If you are staying at a South Shore Vacation Homes property in New Buffalo and you have even 45 minutes to spare this park should be on your itinerary.
What Makes Galien River County Park Worth Your Time
The park sits at 17424 Red Arrow Highway in New Buffalo Township and covers 86 acres of upland and wetland habitats along the Galien River. Berrien County Parks acquired the land in 2001, and the wetland portion is part of the New Buffalo Marsh; a Great Lakes coastal marsh formed upstream from the river’s mouth at Lake Michigan.
What sets it apart from a standard nature trail is the design. The park gives you three distinct ways to experience the same landscape:
- The Ridge Trail, a 1.4-mile loop through hardwood forest edged by steep ravines, bringing you down to the wetland and the river
- The Marsh Boardwalk, a 600-foot elevated walkway that takes you over the surface of the wetland; you are literally walking above the water, surrounded by herons, turtles, and marsh grasses
- The Canopy Walkway and 60-foot Observation Tower, which lifts you above the tree line for sweeping views of the Galien River and its marshlands
Admission is free. The trails are hard-surfaced and barrier-free, making them accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. The park is open dawn to dusk and closes during winter months. One practical note: dogs are not permitted in the park, so plan a separate outing for your pet.
As Visit Southwest Michigan puts it, this is a “must-do in Southwest Michigan, especially during fall color season.” We would extend that to early spring too, when the marsh comes alive with migratory birds and the trails are quiet.
The Galien River Beyond the Park
The park itself is the starting point, not the whole story. The Galien River runs through the heart of New Buffalo before emptying into Lake Michigan at the harbor, and you can experience it multiple ways.
Third Coast Paddling offers kayak and paddleboard rentals on the Galien River. They launch you upriver near the park’s area so you can paddle downstream at your own pace providing a completely different perspective on the same wetlands and marsh you see from the boardwalk. There is also a public kayak launch about a quarter mile upriver from the park for guests who bring their own watercraft.
After your time on the water or the trails, Ghost Isle Brewery sits right down the road on US 12 — a 230-seat brewpub with a covered outdoor patio, rotating craft taps, and a scratch-made food menu. It is one of the best wind-down spots in the area and a natural end to a morning at the park.
Planning Your Day: How to Pair the Park with New Buffalo
Galien River County Park works perfectly as a morning activity before a beach afternoon. Here is how South Shore guests staying in White Pine tend to structure it:
Drive three to five minutes from White Pine to the park. Allow 45 to 60 minutes for all three trail experiences: the Ridge Trail, the Marsh Boardwalk, and the Canopy Tower. Bring water and a camera.
Stop at Ghost Isle Brewery or head into downtown New Buffalo along Whittaker Street for breakfast at one of the local cafes. Redamak’s opens for lunch and is four minutes from White Pine.
Walk or drive to New Buffalo City Beach, three minutes from the White Pine Community. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available near the waterfront.
Return to your South Shore rental and make use of the private hot tub at Campsie Glen or Woodsview, or settle into the screened porch with the fire going while the day winds down.

When to Visit: Getting the Timing Right
New Buffalo follows a predictable seasonal rhythm. Peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend through mid-August, when beach conditions are at their best and South Shore properties fill weeks in advance. Late May, early June, and September offer the most favorable combination of weather, availability, and rates, with the beach still enjoyable and the trails far less crowded.
Galien River County Park is worth prioritizing in spring and fall specifically. In spring, the marsh comes alive with migratory birds and wildflowers, the Ridge Trail is quiet, and the canopy tower offers views that peak summer humidity often softens. If spring nature travel appeals to you, our guide on spring getaways near the Indiana Dunes covers the wider South Shore region’s best seasonal outdoor experiences in detail.
In fall, the hardwood canopy on the Ridge Trail turns in late September and October, and the marsh takes on a completely different quality of light. The park at its most rewarding pairs naturally with the quieter pace of a shoulder season visit.
What Else Is Close to the Park
Ghost Isle Brewery is the most obvious post-hike stop with craft beers, a full menu, and outdoor seating a short distance from the park entrance. The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail begins in New Buffalo, with Warner Vineyards three minutes from White Pine and St. Julian and Round Barn Winery about 12 minutes away on Union Pier Road. Warren Dunes State Park — 260-foot dunes and three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline is 12 minutes north on Red Arrow Highway, making it an easy second stop on the same day.
For guests interested in kayaking, Third Coast Paddling offers Galien River rentals that bring you through the same wetland corridor the park overlooks from above.
